With more than 200,000 direct jobs, 1.5 million indirect jobs, and an estimated 4 million lives impacted, the sector plays a critical role in national development, rural economies and community wellbeing.

But maintaining this contribution in a changing world requires more than continued growth. Global climate pressures, shifting market demands and evolving consumer expectations are raising the bar for how flowers are grown, sourced and traded. The future competitiveness of Kenya’s floriculture industry therefore depends on its ability to grow responsibly, continuously improve and build greater resilience.

This is where the Pinnacle Sustainability Awards come in.

The Awards are more than a celebration of best practice. They recognise farms that are going beyond compliance and demonstrate what sustainability leadership looks like in practice. By showcasing innovation, resilience and responsible operations, Pinnacle creates a platform for farms to learn from one another, benchmark their performance and raise the ambition of the sector as a whole.

At the heart of this journey is the Kenya Flower Council Flowers and Ornamentals Sustainability Standard (KFC FOSS).

The journey began in 1996, when KFC established its original Code of Practice to promote safe and responsible floriculture in Kenya. In 2014, the standard evolved into FOSS, reflecting a more comprehensive approach to environmental stewardship, social responsibility and Good Agricultural Practices.

FOSS provides the foundation for measurable sustainability progress, with achievement recognised through Silver and Gold certification. Silver demonstrates that essential sustainability practices are embedded in everyday farm operations, while Gold recognises farms that demonstrate more advanced and leading-edge practices.

The progress made across the sector is already significant:

• 92% of member farms use Integrated Pest Management, helping reduce pesticide use by up to 40%.
• 85% have adopted efficient irrigation systems.
• Over 60% utilise renewable energy sources.
• The sector contributes to key UN Sustainable Development Goals, including SDG 1 (No Poverty), SDG 5 (Gender Equality), SDG 8 (Decent Work), SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), and SDG 13 (Climate Action).

Yet sustainability is not a destination. Pinnacle creates another layer of ambition, encouraging farms not simply to meet a standard, but to challenge themselves and each other to go further.

Through peer benchmarking and recognition of outstanding performance, the Awards make excellence visible and give farms practical examples of what continuous improvement can look like. The goal is to encourage more farms to move beyond foundational compliance, aspire towards Gold-level performance and ultimately become sustainability leaders in their own right.

In doing so, the Pinnacle Sustainability Awards strengthen Kenya’s position as a trusted, responsible and globally competitive flower producer. With more than 80% of KFC member exports reaching markets in the EU, UK and Middle East, demonstrating leadership in sustainability is not only good for the environment and communities — it is essential to the long-term resilience and competitiveness of the industry.
